The new Children’s Hospital in Dublin will bring together the current services provided at three children’s hospitals into a modern, custom-designed, digital hospital on the St James’s campus. The aim is to provide the best care and treatment for Ireland’s sickest children and young people. As well as playing a central role in the provision of acute paediatric healthcare services, the new children’s hospital will be Ireland’s leading centre for paediatric education, training and research. It will be a world-class, child-centred facility that will support innovation and excellence in paediatric healthcare and create an environment that supports children, young people, their families and the hospital’s staff. The landscape design of the roof combine intensive green roof areas with areas dedicated for pedestrians and light vehicular traffic. With this the roofs become a valuable and integrated element in this vital and modern building complex. Since more than 35,000m² got sealed by the newly constructed roof surfaces, it was decided to equip most roof surfaces with a water retention and storm water management system. This system is able to temporarily store over more than 1,500m³ water. Perfectly suited for these complex requirements is the Nophadrain Water Retention System, based on the water retention element ND WSE-50lt.
In combination with dedictated system elements, such protective layers, filter fabrics and green roof substrate a sustainable, biodiverse and functional environment got created. An environment that also helps coping with the challenges of modern storm water management.
