Extensive | Biodiverse roof with extra water buffer
The ideal system for installing a maintenance-friendly extensive green roof with sedum, herbs and grasses. Suitable for roofs with a higher load capacity.
The growing-medium layer of this composition consists of a combination of substrate, ND DGS-E Substrate Extensive and a substrate replacement, ND SM-50 Substrate Panels. The substrate is tailored to the needs of the vegetation. The substrate height is determined by the type of vegetation: blankets, plug plants or cuttings (see table below).

Additional water buffering in drainage system
The core of this extensive green roof is formed by the ND 6+1v Drainage System on a roll. This multifunctional CE-marked drainage system with high compressive strength protects vegetation against water build-up and at the same time stores water in the built-in water reservoir (7.6 l/m²) for dry periods. In addition, the ND 6+1v Drainage System protects waterproofing membrane against the build-up of water pressure and mechanical loads both during and after construction.
The ND 6+1v Drainage System is easy and quick to install because the filter geotextile, drainage core with water buffering and the protective geotextile are glued together. The drainage system is supplied on a roll and is therefore easy to handle and quick to unroll.
ND SM Substrate Panels for even more water buffering
To make even more water available for vegetation, Nophadrain recommends combining all extensive green roofs with our ND SM Substrate Panels. They are made of hydrophilic (water-absorbing) mineral wool and differ in water storage capacity and density. The ND SM Substrate Panels (available in 25 mm and 50 mm) have a water storage capacity of 15 or 30 l/m². In this composition we show the ND SM-50 Substrate Panels.
The substrate panels are installed above the ND Drainage System and buffer water up to their saturation point. Because of this:
• there is more water available for vegetation,
• important evapotranspiration and the associated water cycles are promoted and
• only excess water ends up in the storm water system.
The ND SM Substrate Panels have a density of 80 kg/m³ and limited compression. Therefore, the ND SM Substrate Panels can be classified as substrate substitutes and their construction height can be deducted from the total substrate height. These properties make the ND SM Substrate Panels particularly suitable for extensive green roofs.
If the waterproofing membrane is not root-resistant, we recommend adding the ND WSB-50 Root Barrier.
