Intensive | extra filter

The ideal system for installing an intensive green roof with vegetation such as grass, shrubs and trees. The ultimate intensive green roof system with extra filter and water buffer.

Our intensive green roof systems are supplied as a complete system, from root-resistant foil to the growing-medium layer. In this composition, the growing-medium layer consists of a combination of substrate, ND DGS-I Substrate Intensive and a substrate replacement, ND WSM-50 Water Reservoir Panels. The intensive substrate is tailored to the needs of intensive vegetation. The substrate height is determined by the type of vegetation, the desired water buffering and the maximum roof load (view the table below).

Water buffering, extra filter and weight saving in one system

The core of this intensive green roof is formed by the ND 4+1h Drainage System on a roll. This multifunctional CE-marked drainage system with high compressive strength protects vegetation against water build-up and at the same time stores water in the built-in water reservoir (of 4.3 l/m²) for dry periods. In addition, the ND 4+1h Drainage System protects the waterproofing membrane against the build-up of water pressure and mechanical loads both during and after construction.

The ND 4+1h Drainage System is easy and quick to install because the filter geotextile, drainage core with water buffering and the protective geotextile are glued together. The drainage system is supplied on a roll and is therefore easy to handle and quick to unroll.

Additional filter layer

The ND WSM-50 Water Reservoir Panels not only replace part of the substrate, they can also act as an additional ‘filter layer’, allowing finer substrates or sandy topsoil with a higher organic content to be used. This imitates a more natural soil structure, in which more soil life (micro-organisms) is possible and which will increase biodiversity. This also has an economic advantage because the raw materials for the substrates are available locally. This means that the substrates can be produced and delivered more economically. A nice bonus is that these water reservoir panels are a weight-saving replacement for substrate.

Additional water buffer

The ND WSM-50 Water Reservoir Panels also add an extra water buffer of approximately 40 l/m², which takes the water management on the roof to a higher level. The larger the water buffer, the more evaporation and transpiration, which lowers the ambient temperature.

The ND WSM-50 Water Reservoir Plates are installed on top of the ND Drainage System and buffer water up to their saturation point. Because of this:
• there is more water available for vegetation,
• important evapotranspiration and the associated water cycles are promoted;
• only excess water ends up in the storm water system.

Suitable for intensive roofs

The ND WSM Water Reservoir Panels have a density of 120 kg/m³. This further improves the compressive strength and ensures that the plates are compressed even less. This makes ND WSM-50 Water Reservoir Panels particularly suitable for any application where higher substrate thicknesses are used, such as biodiverse, semi-intensive, intensive green roofs.

If the waterproofing membrane is not root-resistant, we recommend adding the ND WSB-80 Root Barrier.
